The annual exam:

Every year, we would like our patients to schedule an appointment for their annual exam. During this office visit, you can discuss any questions or concerns you have in regards to your mental and physical health. We will concentrate on the following:

1. Breast Exam- please always inform us if you have noticed any lumps or changes in your breasts including any nipple discharge or changes in your breast contour.

2. Pelvic Exam- Besides performing the pap smear, we will make sure that there are no abnormalities externally or internally. Please inform your doctor, nurse practitioner, or midwife if you have noticed any changes in your vaginal discharge or menstraul period. If you're having issues with painful intercourse, pelvic pain, or any other gynecologic conditions we would like to address this at your annual visit.

3. Contraception- At AWH we offer all approved methods of birth control and sterilization. If you would like counseling in regards to IUDs or office tubal sterilization (Essure Procedure) please inform your medical provider.

4. Menopause- All medical providers at AWH are well trained in menopause medicine. We are very sensitive about this important transition in your life and, if needed, can individualize your treatment with pharmaceutical grade or natural compounded hormones. Please tell us if you are having problems with insomnia, hot flushes, vaginal dryness, or concentration.

5. Bone Density- Half of all post menopausal women with experience an osteoporotic fracture in their life. We will order a bone density test and the necessary lab work so we can counsel you about your bone health and possible need for medical treatment. We usually order your baseline bone density at menopause unless your medical health suggests that ealier testing is warranted. Based on these results, the medical providers at AWH will individualize a surveilance and treatment regimen to keep your bones healthy.

6. Abnormal paps- At AWH, we only utilize the newest liquid based pap smear tests along with HPV testing to evaluate your cervical health. We evaluate significant pap smear abnormalities with in office colposcopy and biopsy and can treat these problems in our office with cryotherapy or a LEEP procedure if necessary.

7. Her Option Procedure- If you are experiencing abnormally heavy periods and have finished having children, we offer a simple in office procedure to freeze the lining of your uterus (HER OPTION PROCEDURE), instead of the older method of hysterectomy which is a hospital based and much more painful procedure.
